CLIO UNBOUND was founded in 2025 by Elizabeth Schmidt and is currently based in Iowa City, Iowa. With a focus on historical literature, we seek to understand the present by looking back at the past. Whether that be through research, reflection, reinterpreting, or reimagining, we welcome works that tell and expand on history buried by time. We accept short stories, essays, and poetry, no matter where you are in the world.

In ancient Greece, Clio was the muse of history, guiding artists through stories of the past. Here, we wish to do the same, calling writers to explore their connection to the people and places that came long before them. What words will you write in their wake? How will you fill the gap between record and legend?
